Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS)
ITFS is a microwave broadcast technology in the 2.5 2.7 GHz range. The Federal Communications Commission created ITFS for educational institutions to distribute instructional television programs to schools. ITFS is most often used as a broadcast service from one point to multiple receive sites. ITFS requires a FCC license to operate. There is currently a moratorium on license applications.
Several Florida school districts and community colleges operate ITFS systems. Some operate as independent services and others operate in conjunction with commercial Wireless operators.
Recent developments in digital technology allow the transmission of multiple digital channels in place of one analog channel increasing the number of services that can be offered.
A newly adopted FCC order permits license holders to use their bandwidth for two-way services and to channelize their bandwidth for multiple video, audio and data services.
